May Day 2015

When I was a kid May Day was always a big deal. Is it still a big deal? I am not so sure at this point. I sure don’t hear many people talking about it, or celebrating it anymore. Perhaps it has more to do with the part of the country that I reside in now than it does with folks no longer celebrating it. As a kid I always looked forward to it because it meant one more holiday that would garner me a basket full of candy. Yea! Plus it also meant that the coat I was forced to wear for what felt like 12 months of winter had been shed and I was free to play outside unrestricted. As I remember it, that moment when I stepped outside without a coat on was such a feeling of freedom. I suppose like so many other things that are starting to disappear from our lives as Americans this spring tradition of dancing around the maypole and crowning the Queen of May will some day soon be nothing more than a distant memory.
